TOS WINTER MEETING
FEBRUARY 8-10, 2002 AT PICKWICK

The 2002 TOS Winter Meeting will be held Friday, February 8 through Sunday, February 10 at Pickwick Landing State Park near Savannah, Tennessee.

Field trips to nearby areas will take place Saturday and Sunday. Among the many exciting possibilities are a large variety of waterfowl, gulls at Pickwick Dam, Short-eared Owls, Brown-headed Nuthatches, a large variety of sparrows, and Lapland Longspurs.

Tentative Agenda:

Friday
7:30 PM - Informal gathering, field trip signup

Saturday
7:00 AM - Field trips depart
2:30 PM - Afternoon program/workshop on the Important Bird Areas program in Tennessee. Click here for more information on IBAs and this workshop.
4:30 PM - Short-eared Owl field trip departs
Supper on your own
8:00 PM - Evening program/workshop on the Important Bird Areas program, continued from the afternoon

Sunday
7:00 AM - Field trips depart
12:00 - Field trips end, bird on your own or depart for home.

Field Trips:

Pickwick Landing State Park, Pickwick Dam, and Bruton Branch - Woodland birding including lots of pine forests and Brown-headed Nuthatches; open lake with various waterfowl and lots of gulls.

River Bottoms: Agricultural fields with sparrows and longspurs (3 LeConte's, 10 Vesper Sparrows and 254 Lapland Longspur recorded on the CBC); bottomland hardwoods; swamps and marshes.

Savannah: Sewage ponds with various waterfowl; urban area with Eurasian Collared Dove (first county record on this year's CBC); agricultural fields with sparrows and longspurs; general woodland birding.

Shiloh National Military Park: General woodland birding; agricultural fields with sparrows and longspurs.

Short-eared Owl Trip: To fields near Savannah.

Note: We regret to announce that the Saturday program we previously announced here, "Conservation of threatened birds in Peru through birdwatching activities," by Gunnar Engblom, of Lima, Peru, will not be held because of changes in Mr. Engblom's travel plans.
