Mayfield-Gray (Columbia) Chapter

The first TOS chapter in Columbia, called the Bluegrass Chapter, disbanded in the early 1940s. In 1975, Dr. George Mayfield Jr. , Dr. Dan Gray Jr., Dr. Bill Fuqua and others founded the Columbia Chapter of the TOS. In the spring of 2000, the chapter changed its name to the Mayfield-Gray Chapter, in honor of the endless contributions that Mayfield and Gray made to the study of birdlife in Tennessee. George Mayfield
and the late Dan Gray's wife Gaither were honored at the chapter's annual picnic on June 6, 2000.

Among the chapter's preferred birding areas are wetland/pond complexes resulting from phosphate mining operations at Monsanto, Arrow Lake, and Williamsport Lakes. The new Duck River Wildlife Management Area is also a favorite area. These areas feature a variety of wetland and open water species, as well as grassland species. Heavily wooded areas in the north of the county attract warblers during migration.

The chapter meets twice a year to participate in spring bird counts and the Christmas Bird Counts. Other interests include breeding bird surveys and point counts on the two wildlife management areas in Maury County. Novices and pros are welcome to participate. Field trips are announced on TN-Birds server, usually during migration in April and May.

Elizabethton, Lee and Lois Herndon Chapter

The Lee and Lois Herndon Chapter, named for its founders, Dr. Lee R. Herndon and his wife, Lois Herndon, was founded in 1944. Activities sponsored by the chapter include two Christmas Bird Counts (Elizabethton and Roan Mountain), as well as counts in the spring, summer and fall. The chapter also holds a July picnic and an annual banquet in March. In October, Saturday morning bird walks are hosted at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area in Elizabethton promoting birding to the general public.

The chapter meets the first Tuesday of each month, at 7:00 p.m., on the Milligan College campus (lower level of the Science Building). Milligan College is located on Milligan Highway (Highway 67) between Johnson City and Elizabethton.

Annual dues are $24 (Individual Membership), which includes state dues. All members receive The Kestrel, the chapter's monthly newsletter, edited by Bryan Stevens.

Meetings traditionally consist of a program and chapter business. Sightings of unusual and/or migratory birds made in Northeast Tennessee (Washington, Carter, Johnson, Unicoi and Sullivan Counties) are also recorded. Bird records for the five-county region (kept by the club) go back to its inception.

Greeneville Chapter

The Greeneville Chapter of the TOS is a group of 25-35 area bird enthusiasts offering birding affiliation for old and young, expert and novice. Organized in 1946, the chapter is one of the Society's oldest. It offers monthly events consisting primarily of field trips but also including presentations by speakers from the region.

The chapter contributes to the community by working with private landowners, public works facilities, and various groups to install and maintain bluebird houses, survey important bird areas, and encourage land use practices that support wildlife. In addition, some members share their birding knowledge with area schools, garden clubs, scout troops, and other organizations. A number of members participate in hawk watches, roadside raptor surveys, and eagle counts.

The Greeneville Chapter holds three annual counts: Spring, Fall, and Christmas. Contact a member for information on participating..

Highland Rim Chapter

The Highland Rim Chapter of the TOS was organized on January 29, 1974 in Manchester. Sanford McGee, then a biology teacher at Central High School, had called the meeting. At the meeting he; Ken Dubke, Tennessee Ornithological Society Treasurer; and Tony Koella, Assistant State Commissioner of Conservation, encouraged local residents and residents of nearby counties to organize a club. Mr. McGee pointed out that the area was a good area for bird watching and nature study, and that the nearest groups with these interests were in Murfreesboro and Chattanooga. The club began with fifteen members representing three counties. Over the years membership has grown and remains between 40 and 50 members. At present Coffee, Bedford, Moore, Franklin, and Grundy Counties are represented.

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. during the months September through May. An August picnic begins the program year. Annual dues are $15.00 for an individual and $17.00 for a family (includes $10 TOS dues).

Activities include 10 meetings with programs, and 12-14 field trips to include the hawk watch, roadside raptor survey, Christmas count, eagle count, spring count, and breeding bird survey. Club members contribute to the community by speaking to civic groups and to school classes on matters of wildlife, and habitat conservation. Anyone interested in joining the club may obtain information by calling (or sending E-mail to) any of the officers listed below.
