Freels Bend is part of the Three Bend Scenic and Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is a specially protected conservation area on the Oak Ridge Reservation that is managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency for DOE. It provides habitats for regionally, nationally, or globally unique, rare, or endangered animal species and communities.Hembree marsh is part of the Bear Creek/McNew Hollow Floodplain, a registered State Natural Area on the Oak Ridge Reservation. It provides habitat for some rare aquatic and terrestrial animal species.Bird houses have been placed at Freels Bend, an old field area of the Oak Ridge Reservation where a controlled burn has been conducted to promote restoration of native grass communities there.
