Note: The Lauderdale Refuge lies within the East Gulf Coastal Plain, but because of its close proximity to the MAV, it is considered part of the IBA site, Mississippi Alluvial Valley in Tennessee.
Location:
North of Halls, to the east of the junction with Poplar Grove and SR

Description: Site
is an area of flooded fields in the winter as a refuge for waterfowl and cultivated
in the summer with crops for waterfowl in the winter. There is an observation
tower.
IBA Criteria:
4a
Ornithological Importance: Waterfowl
is the main criteria for the site. Other records of note: American White Pelican--November
20, 2005 (100); Wilson's Snipe--November 19, 2005 (134).
Note 1. The five-year waterfowl (ducks, geese,
and swans) average from the "Tennessee Mid-Winter Waterfowl Survey,"
2001-2005, is 9,450 birds (2% of the statewide wintering total). The total annual
number of waterfowl during that survey period is 2001 (10,712), 2002 (8,615),
2003 (7,425), 2004), and 2005 (16,838). The five-year average for the major wintering
duck species is Mallard (4,069), Gadwall (1,061), Ring-necked Duck (692), and
Northern Pintail (541). Canada Goose 5-year average is 1,447
birds . Four species of geese are regularly seen. Geese: November
20, 2004 (494) of three species migrating over. Greater White-fronted
Goose--December 3, 2005 (300).
High Number of waterfowl species: January 1, 2004 (17 species),
November 14, 2004 (17 species), November 20, 2004 (19 species), and February 5,
2005 (19 species).
