2007 FALL MEETING AND SYMPOSIUM
HELD IN MANCHESTER
November
2-4
The
2007 Fall Meeting and Symposium was held in Manchester on November
2, 3 and 4. The meeting was hosted by the Highland Rim TOS chapter, and the meeting
headquarters was the Ambassador Inn & Luxury Suites at 925 Interstate Drive (I-24,
Exit 110).
Field
Trips
Destinations included:
Arnold Engineering & Development
Center (AECD) - This research and development center a part of Arnold Air Force
Base and has many good birding sites. AEDC staff biologist John Lamb lead the
field trip group to several areas not open to the general public. For more on
the area, see the IBA
account and the base website.
Woods
Reservoir - Searched for early arriving waterfowl and other birds. The 4000-acre
reservoir was created when the Air Force dammed the Elk River to create a cooling
water supply for AEDC. For more on the area, particularly its fishery, click here.
Other
good nearby birding areas to explore on your own or in a small troup include:
Old
Stone Fort State Archaeological Park and Manchester Greenway.

Highlights included in Franklin Co. 1 LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and small flock of PINE
SISKINS fly-over (heard first by Ed LeGrand), at least one RED-BREASTED NUTHACH
and several WINTER WRENS. Conditions were not ideal on Woods Reservoir but there
were a couple of groups of shorebirds with more than one person getting their
life look at DUNLIN with a nice in-scope comparison with Least Sandpiper.
Symposium
A
regular feature of the TOS Fall Meetings is the symposium, during which TOS members
and others present the results of their studies of birds in or near Tennessee.
Six people gave presentations during the symposium, which was moderated by Chuck
Nicholson. Click here for
abstracts of the presentations.
