2017 Fall Meeting and Symposium at Kingsport

October 6-8

The Kingsport Chapter will host the 2017 fall meeting and symposium in Kingsport. The meeting will be held Friday, October 6 through Sunday, October 8. Activities will include field trips on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and the annual symposium and fall Board of Directors meeting Saturday afternoon.

The Friday evening registration, social, and informal dinner will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Shelter #9 at Bays Mountain Recreation Area, 404 Bays Mountain Park Road, Kingsport.

Other meeting activities will be at the Meadowview Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center, 1901 Meadowview Parkway, Kingsport, TN 37760. The Meadowview Marriot is adjacent to the Cattails Golf Course, which provides good birding opportunities. It is also at the foot of Bays Mountain, the location of Bays Mountain Park, the largest city park in the state and a well-known birding site.

Field trips on Saturday and Sunday mornings are planned for Roan Mountain, the South Holston Weir Dam, and various locations around Kingsport on the Kingsport Birding Trail.

Lodging

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Meadowview Marriott, (423) 578-6600. When making your reservation, ask for the Birding Kingsport Room Block to receive the room rate of $111.00 plus tax.

An additional block of rooms is being held at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Kingsport-Meadowview I-26, 1217 Stewball Circle, Kingsport, phone (423) 723-2300, at the rates of @112.00 plus tax for a couple and $122.00 plus tax for a suite. Breakfast is included. Mention Birding Kingsport when making your reservation to receive the special rates. This hotel is about 1.5 miles from the Meadowview Marriott.

Other nearby hotels include a Hampton Inn, Comfort Suites, and a Quality Inn.

Saturday Banquet

The menu for the Saturday evening banquet is chicken, salad, two sides, rolls, dessert, tea, and coffee. Vegetarian and glutin-free options are available. The banquet speaker will be Dr. Fred J. Alsop, III, a professor in the ETSU Department of Biological Sciences. Dr. Alsop tells students who take his ornithology classes “this class will change your life,” and it does.
