Late summer and fall is shorebird time in Tennessee, and we're off to a running start. An adult RUFF of uncertain gender was discovered at the EARTH Complex in Memphis on August 4th (Jeff Wilson). A total of fourteen species were present. The RUFF was present through the 7th, but could not be found on the 8th, although a PIPING PLOVER and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were nice consolation prizes (Jeff Wilson). On the 9th, those two were joined by a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and on the 10th, a second WILSON'S PHALAROPE and a different PIPING PLOVER were present (Jeff Wilson). Also on the 10th, all five regularly occurring tern species were observed at the nearby TVA Allen plant (Jeff Wilson). On August 11th, 17 species of shorebirds were observed in the Memphis area, with the EARTH Complex producing, in addition to some of the birds mentioned above, 4 UPLAND SANDPIPERS and 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS (Jeff Wilson).
Also on August 11th, the Kingston Steam Plant hosted a WILSON'S PHALAROPE among seven species of shorebirds (Frank Bills).
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was reported from Hawkins County on August 2nd (John & Dee Eiklor fide Rick Knight), and another in Claiborne County on August 11th (Janice Martin fide Wallace Coffey).
The next NTOS meeting will be Thursday, August 16th at 7:00 PM at Radnor Lake State Natural Area featuring a program on birding in Costa Rica. Shorebirds are on the move, and the fall migration is underway. Thanks for calling, and good birding.
